Fall in Dayton: A Local's Guide to the Best of the Season

Hola y'all! I will say it loud and proud: fall in Dayton might be the best thing this city does all year. The air finally turns crisp, the trees put on a show, and everywhere you look there is cider, flannel, and a hayride with your name on it. It is the season that makes people slow down and actually enjoy where they live, and honestly, it is one of the prettiest times to fall in love with a neighborhood.

So whether you are brand new to the Miami Valley, thinking about planting roots here, or you have been around for years and just need a nudge to get out and enjoy it, here is my local's list for soaking up every golden day of fall in Dayton.

Pumpkin patches and apple orchards

This is the heart of a Dayton fall. The Miami Valley is surrounded by family orchards and pumpkin farms, and a Saturday spent picking your own is my favorite kind of day. Load up on apples, grab a jug of fresh cider and a bag of hot cider donuts (non-negotiable), and let the kids get lost in a corn maze. You will find hayrides, petting zoos, and photo-worthy pumpkin mountains all within a short drive of town. Bonus: the cider donuts alone are worth the trip, and I will not be taking questions.

Fall festivals worth circling

Fall in the Miami Valley is festival season part two. Keep an eye out for harvest festivals, fall street fairs, Oktoberfest celebrations, and craft markets popping up in the little downtowns all around Dayton. Half the fun is wandering into something you did not plan for, so follow your local MetroParks and downtown accounts and you will never run short of a weekend plan. Waynesville and the surrounding small towns go all out with their fall gatherings, so it is worth the drive.

Leaf-peeping done right

If you take one thing from a local, it is this: our MetroParks are the whole reason fall here is so beautiful. Cox Arboretum has gorgeous gardens and trails that light up gold and crimson, Hills & Dales is a classic for a color-drenched walk close to town, and Englewood MetroPark gives you the waterfalls and big canopy hikes if you want to really earn your pumpkin spice. They are free, they are everywhere, and this is when they are at their absolute prettiest. When the light comes through those leaves, I honestly think God shows off a little in the fall, and all we have to do is slow down long enough to notice how much beauty is packed into this little corner of Ohio.

Cozy up at a local cafe

Sweater weather was made for a warm drink and a good book, and Dayton has some genuinely lovely coffee shops for exactly that. A few of my go-tos:

• Press Coffee Bar downtown for a bright, welcoming spot to post up with a latte.
• Ghostlight Coffee in the Wayne Avenue area for great espresso and serious neighborhood charm.
• Winans for coffee and chocolate together, which feels exactly right when it is chilly out.

Grab a seat by a window, order something with cinnamon in it, and watch the leaves come down. That is a whole fall afternoon and it costs about five dollars.

Halloween in the Miami Valley

Dayton takes Halloween seriously in the best way. You will find haunted houses and haunted trails for the brave, family-friendly trunk-or-treats and pumpkin glows for the little ones, and neighborhood trick-or-treat nights that turn whole streets into a party. Some of our older, tree-lined neighborhoods absolutely shine on Halloween night, and truthfully, watching how a street shows up for trick-or-treat tells you a lot about who lives there.

Friday night lights

There is nothing more Ohio than high school football on a cool Friday night. The stadium lights, the marching band, the concession stand nachos, the whole town in the stands. It is free (or close to it), it is pure community, and it is the kind of night that makes you love where you live. If you want to feel the pulse of a neighborhood, go stand at its football game on a Friday in October.

"You do not really know a neighborhood until you have walked it in the fall. That is when a place shows you its whole personality."
